Mars-Bound Astronauts Could Face Higher Risk of Cancer

Astronauts who travel to Mars one day could be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation during their trip, even if shielding techniques are used, a new study shows.

When the Mars Science Laboratory launched on Nov. 26, 2011, it began a 350-million-mile (560 million kilometers) trip to the surface of the Red Planet. During its voyage, a group of researchers, including Southwest Research Institute scientist Cary Zeitlin, monitored exactly how much radiation a piece of science hardware on the?Mars rover Curiosity was exposed to over the 253-day journey from Earth to Mars.

"In space, it's between a 100 and 1,000 times higher dose rate [of radiation] than on Earth," Zeitlin told SPACE.com. "It's highly uncertain what the health risk is from these exposures." [Could Radiation Harm Astronauts Traveling to Mars? (Video)]

Zeitlin, whose study is detailed in the journal Science this week, collected the data with his team by turning on the Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument while Curiosity was in flight. The instrument was active from 10 days after launch until about three weeks before landing.

Shielding from cosmic rays

By monitoring the variety and strength of each of the energetic particles entering the Mars Science Laboratory's hull, Zeitlin and his team were able to accurately track which particles of radiation got through and which were blocked by the ship's shielding.

If they were to travel to Mars, astronauts would be exposed to two forms of cosmic radiation?that don't pose a serious risk on Earth. One of those sources of radiation ? galactic cosmic rays ? are difficult to shield against and regularly fly through space-faring vessels. On the other hand, the second source of radiation ? solar energetic particles ? can be at least partially blocked by robust shielding used to protect spaceflyers.

"The rover itself during the trip was surrounded by the equipment used for the entry, descent and landing," Zeitlin said. "RAD was very unevenly shielded. About half was lightly shielded. The heat shield below didn't really provide very much in the way of shielding. But above, there was quite a bit, and on a human inhabited vehicle, you would want it much more uniform."

Worth the risk?

The research could have implications for future NASA missions to Mars. If space agency scientists expect that radiation exposure over the course of a mission will increase an astronaut's risk of developing fatal cancer over his or her lifetime by at least 3 percent, NASA deems the mission too dangerous, Zeitlin said.

Certain people are at higher risk of developing these kinds of radiation-induced cancers: Young women are most at risk, while older men are in less danger. Even with the margin of error built into Curiosity's new results, however, the dose rate of the radiation that any astronaut would receive during the initial and return flights would probably put them over the 3 percent limit, Zeitlin said. [Missions to Mars: Human Occupation of the Red Planet (Infographic)]

Zeitlin and his colleagues estimate that astronauts would be exposed to about 0.66 Sievert (Sv) ? the unit scientists use for measuring radiation ? of galactic cosmic ray radiation during the round-trip to Mars, not including their time spent on the surface of the Red Planet. About 1 Sv of radiation exposure is usually associated with about a 5 percent bump in fatal-cancer risk later in life.

The dose rate of radiation that the planetary explorers would be exposed to on the surface of Mars would be lower than the amount of cosmic radiation in space. However, it could still be significant, Zeitlin said.

Although this level of radiation might not make astronauts immediately ill, it still could impair their ability to conduct research from Mars. "There is some concern that there could be damage to cognitive ability that would manifest itself in the short run," Zeitlin said.

Future of space travel

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are exposed to both galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles during their six months in orbit, but an astronaut flying to Mars would get a higher dose over a longer period of time.

"Scientists need to validate theories and models with actual measurements, which RAD is now providing. These measurements will be used to better understand how radiation travels through deep space and how it is affected and changed by the spacecraft structure itself," Donald Hassler, a program director at the Southwest Research Institute and principal investigator of the RAD investigation, said in a statement. "The spacecraft protects somewhat against lower-energy particles, but others can propagate through the structure unchanged or break down into secondary particles."

The new findings will allow scientists to use hard data in computer models set up to investigate just how much radiation astronauts could encounter on their journey to another planet. This kind of research could be particularly important for NASA in the coming years, as officials from the space agency gear up to possibly send humans to Mars by the 2030s.

Scientists from the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel in Germany, the German Aerospace Center and NASA also contributed to the new study.

Shakira: 'I have to be very careful' on 'The Voice'

Worried that her last singer in the game might be eliminated has superstar Shakira shying away from taking risks a bit.

Shakira?s a survivor ? for now. With only one contestant ? Sasha Allen ? remaining on her team on ?The Voice,? the superstar was worried that her singer would be cut this week, which would also knock Shakira out of the game. But instead, Sasha moved into the top six.

?I was prepared for the worst (Tuesday),? Shakira told TODAY.com after the results show. ?Honestly, I didn't sleep (Monday) night, thinking about Sasha, the possibility that I maybe screwed up her career by making her sing a dance song.?

The Latin superstar, who said during the results show that if Sasha were to be eliminated it would be ?because her coach made a mistake,? vowed to be more careful with song choices. ?I have to be very careful. No more experimenting,? she said. ?And it's difficult. It's virtually impossible because on this show, it's one of the key factors. ... You continuously try to help your own artist find their artistic identity and that takes experimentation, and when you experiment you have to be open to make mistakes.?

Conversely, fellow coach Adam Levine wasn?t shy in expressing his displeasure with the eliminations of Judith Hill and Sarah Simmons, both from his team. ?Those two girls shouldn't have gone home,? he told TODAY.com, ?but tomorrow's another day and they're both going to be fine.?

With their Tuesday ousters, he?s now in the same boat as Shakira and Usher ? he has only one singer left in the game, country crooner Amber Carrington.

Despite the defeats, he?s not reconsidering his coaching approach. ?If you want to have any kind of success at all, ever, in your life, you can't just constantly be making changes to cater to someone else or something else,? he explained. ?I don't make compromises. I never have and I definitely never will.?

He also nixed the idea that he?s particularly focused on ending Blake Shelton?s run of ?Voice? victories. ?We joke around and like to make it about that, but it's not about that,? he said. ?I could care less about whether I win or lose. I care much more about nurturing the talent on the show. And that's where my job begins and ends. I'm not here to do anything other than that.?

Even so, does the Maroon 5 frontman think the possibility of Blake winning three seasons in a row would make the country star even more interesting to work with?

?He won't be any worse than he always is,? Adam joked, ?which is just godawful.?

MIDEAST WEEKAHEAD-Declining Morocco stocks face frontier risk

By Carolyn Cohn and Aziz El Yaakoubi

LONDON/RABAT, May 29 (Reuters) - Morocco's possible demotion

to frontier market status next month may deter international

investors and put the country's stock market, already suffering

from tumbling share prices and trading volumes, further at risk.

Index compiler MSCI, which has $7 trillion in global assets

benchmarked against its indices, put Morocco on review for

downgrade to its frontier index last year, and makes its

decision on June 11.

Relegation from the emerging market index would reduce

foreign investor interest in Morocco, which is suffering from

the financial crisis in the euro zone, its biggest trading

partner.

It would also be a blow to the country's pride as it invests

billions of dollars to maintain its reputation for relative

stability in the politically uncertain Middle East and North

Africa region.

"Morocco's economy is suffering badly due to its close ties

with Europe, the market has been penalized with huge pressure on

earnings," said Sebastien Henin, portfolio investor at The

National Investor in Dubai.

Some Casablanca-listed banking and real estate stocks were

hitting record lows as investors sold shares ahead of the MSCI

announcement, he said.

"If the country is taken out of the emerging market index,

expect the trackers of the index to leave. In an illiquid market

such as Morocco, you could have heavy selling."

Liquidity, one of the key factors for inclusion in the MSCI

emerging market index, against which $1.4 trillion is

benchmarked, is dwindling.

Morocco's overall stock market transactions volume, of which

foreign investors make up 28 percent, was 13.421 billion dirhams

($1.56 billion) in the first quarter, plunging 59 percent from

the fourth quarter of 2012. Compared with the first quarter of

last year, volume was down 8 percent, according to data from

bourse watchdog CDVM.

"It is almost impossible for an investor to make a big trade

without affecting the share price," a local trader said.

Morocco's free-float market cap, another main factor

influencing MSCI's rankings, has lost almost a third since 2009,

falling to around 90 billion dirhams.

The Casablanca bourse's benchmark MASI index has

dropped 14 percent since the MSCI said last June that Morocco

could be downgraded, and is trading at around 8,727 points,

close to its lowest levels in more than six years.

It has fallen 6 percent, including two sessions of downward

gaps - an opening level well below the previous day's low -

since MSCI set the date of its review a few weeks ago.

Moroccan officials say they have been lobbying hard to

retain their place as an emerging market, including making

roadshow presentations.

"We have a short-term action plan promoting scenarios to

help Morocco have more liquidity," Anass Alami, chief executive

of the government's financial arm CDG, told Reuters on a visit

to London earlier this year.

"Long term there are (plans for) laws on short-selling which

will help liquidity."

Investors have also been canvassed for their opinions on

MSCI's review. MSCI is also considering an upgrade from frontier

status for Gulf economies Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Moroccan stocks make up less than 1 percent of the MSCI

emerging market index. One of the three constituents, Maroc

Telecom had its weight reduced by 50 percent last year

due to low liquidity.

A drop to frontier status would mean smaller amounts of

money would track Morocco, and investment banks would probably

assign fewer research analysts to the country.

But Casablanca boasts stronger local liquidity than other

frontier markets such as those in sub-Saharan Africa, according

to Luca del Conte, in capital markets sales at broker Exotix.

Valuations, while historically low by Moroccan standards,

are also above the average for frontier markets, according to

Datastream. (see http://link.reuters.com/sap48t for graphic)

Del Conte thought Morocco may hang onto emerging market

status for now, particularly given Taiwan and South Korea, for

example, have been on review for upgrade to developed market

status for years.

"Just like we have the annual Cannes film festival, we have

the annual MSCI review," he said.

FRONTIER BOOM?

If MSCI does downgrade Morocco, some market watchers see a

silver lining.

Morocco would increase its weighting in its MSCI index from

less than 1 percent to as much as 10 percent.

And as valuations are historically low, the country could

benefit more from the current dash to high-yielding frontier

market assets, as developed market central banks around the

world stick with minimal interest rates.

"It would be sad to lose the MSCI's rating as an emerging

market," CDVM CEO Karim Hajji said, but added:

"It is not necessarily bad news - we can benefit from being

frontier market assets."

When Israel moved the other way, with an upgrade to

developed market status in 2010, foreign investor flows

initially shrank to practically zero, as Israel's weighting in

the index was so small.

If either UAE or Qatar made the leap to emerging market

status, that would leave a hole in the frontier index that

Morocco could go some way to fill.

UAE currently makes up 12 percent of the frontier index and

Qatar 15 percent, according to MSCI.

But Moroccan stocks may have to fall even further before

they attract investors back, with some expecting the

well-developed local fund industry will keep valuations high

relative to other markets in the region.

"Since MSCI's plans last year to downgrade Morocco to the

frontier market index, there has been an outflow of funds from

international investors," said Faid Al Said, head of investments

at ING Investment Management in Dubai.

"As a country, it's an important market, but we're staying

away, in wait for interesting valuations and entry levels."

Nintendo Japan announces white 32GB Wii U, Wiimote quick charger

Nintendo Japan announces white 32GB Wii U, Wiimote quick charger, special Luigi edition 3DS XL and

An official extended battery for its Wii U Gamepad isn't the only thing Nintendo Japan posted on its website tonight, as it also added a white option for the Wii U 32GB Premium set, a 30th Anniversary Luigi special edition 3DS XL and quick charging option for the Wiimote. Surveys surfaced earlier this year suggesting a fast charging option on the way for the Wiimote, and in Japan gamers will be able to add the accessory -- consisting of replacement battery / backplate and charging stand, pictured after the break -- starting July 13th for 4,200 yen ($41) , and 2,625 yen ($26) for the battery alone. That should allow not only faster charging, but also longer battery life than Wii gamers have been used to.

July 13th is the same day the white Wii U premium will arrive as well, coming at the same price and packing the same accessories as the existing black 32GB console. Finally, Nintendo listed all the details for the special Luigi edition 3DS XL announced recently on Nintendo Direct. Of course, none of these are the games that even Iwata admits the Wii U needs, but a few more choices can't hurt, can they?

Physicists Just Created the World's Most Precise Clock?Ever

Physicists Just Created the World's Most Precise Clock?Ever

We know that the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old?give or take a few hundred million years. Which seems like a decently accurate reading. But a new pair of clocks, which can measure time at a 1018 fractional level, makes our own measurements look like child's play. To have the same level of precision as these twin timepieces, we'd have to be able to specify the age of the known universe to within less than one second.

Tweaking an already wildly accurate method of telling time might seem a tad excessive. But a single second didn't just arise as an arbitrary measurement?it's based on an atom's frequency. And accurately measuring this doesn't come easy. Anything from a stray electric field to any movement of the atom whatsoever affects the measurement?small sources of error, sure, but error nonetheless.

To overcome these complications, Andrew Ludlow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder and his team used something known as an "optical lattice clock." By bouncing a laser off a mirror, they're able "to create a standing wave of light which forms a lattice to trap atoms. This is a kind of eggbox in which the atoms sit." With the ytterbium atoms neatly trapped, the clock is free to zap them with a different laser and measure the electrons' frequencies. Leaving you with a clock that will only lose about one second avery 31 billion years. Not bad.

And their extreme sensitivity means that they can measure the gravitational redshift, a phenomenon in which time moves more slowly in stronger gravitational forces?meaning they can alert us to changes in height. But while current clocks can sense change mostly kilometer-wise, these new ones will be able to measure a shift in heigh even at around 1 cm. So these new clocks are ready to go right to work, particularly in fields such as hydrology, geology, and climate change in general.

Ludlow and his team may already looking to the next advancement in time measurement, but for now, this opens the door to some major advancements in our understanding of the world around us. Now if only there were a wrist-friendly version. [MIT Technology Review]

Leader's daughter: Fear behind Polish martial law

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? The daughter of Poland's last communist leader, Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, says her father's innate pessimism and fear dictated his decision to impose martial law against the Solidarity freedom movement in 1981.

Jaruzelski, 89, has said he chose a "lesser evil" in imposing martial law on Dec. 13, 1981, in the hey-day of Solidarity, which opposed communist rule. He maintains he prevented a Soviet military intervention and a bloodbath, saying that Moscow was ready to use force to preserve its control of Poland.

Thousands of dissidents were arrested and some 100 people were killed during the 18 months of the clampdown. Poor health prevents Jaruzelski from standing trial on charges he violated the law by imposing military rule and was the leader of an armed criminal group, as his military Cabinet of the time is described in the indictment.

In her new book about her family "Comrade Miss," Monika Jaruzelska writes that her father's "pessimism and a sense of fear determined many decisions ... including that most important one."

She declined comment on the book Tuesday.

A student of Polish literature at Warsaw University, she learned of the clampdown at the same time as other Poles from her father's statement in the media. Three days later, he called her from his office to break the news of the death of nine miners shot by the riot police while protesting the martial law.

In 1985-86, Monika Jaruzelska accompanied her father on state visits to Moscow-backed leaders in Cuba, North Korea and Libya.

She calls Libya's then-leader Moammar Gadhafi a "soap opera character." He had a Polish masseuse, by the first name Bozenka, who was the only one sporting an above-the-knee skirt in his entourage.

North Korea's first leader, Kim Il Sung, was "simply a modest, nice man, rather short (...) It would be hard to conclude from his looks that he was a terrible despot."

In 1989, when Solidarity prevailed, Wojciech Jaruzelski was chosen by a partly democratic parliament to be Poland's first president after communism.

He was replaced by Solidarity leader Lech Walesa after democratic elections in 1990.

Analysis: Syria contagion strikes deep into Lebanon

By Dominic Evans

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Two rockets fired at Hezbollah-controlled southern Beirut bring Syria's escalating civil war deeper into the heart of Lebanon and closer to unrestrained regional conflict.

The two-year-old conflict in Syria has already tumbled into Lebanon's Bekaa Valley, exploded into deadly street fighting in its northern city of Tripoli and driven half a million refugees across the same porous border to escape the bloodshed.

But Sunday's rocket attack, which wounded five people in a Shi'ite neighborhood of Beirut, marked the first apparent targeting of Hezbollah's stronghold in the south of the capital and raised memories of years of civil war in the city.

The rockets struck hours after a defiant Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah vowed that his guerrilla group, waging war alongside President Bashar al-Assad against Syrian rebels, was fighting for victory whatever the cost.

Both events were milestones in the creeping contagion of a conflict which has already killed 80,000 people within Syria's borders and fuelled sectarian tension from Beirut to Baghdad. It has sucked in regional rivals Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, Iraq and Israel and polarized major powers - the U.S. and Europe siding with the opposition and Russia and China with Assad.

"It is hugely alarming. It points to the fact that there are a decreasing number of brakes that can be applied to this situation," said Julien Barnes-Dacey, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

"It's spiraling out of control, moving deeper and deeper within Syria but clearly now across Lebanon and the region."

No one claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack but it was widely assumed to be a response to Nasrallah's speech by Syrian rebels or their sympathizers.

One Syrian rebel described it as a warning to Lebanese authorities to rein in the Iranian-backed Shi'ite Muslim group, which is armed and financed by Iran, or face further consequences.

WARNING TO REBEL BACKERS

By dropping any ambiguity about Hezbollah's determination to keep Assad in power, Nasrallah may have been laying down a marker to the Syrian leader's Western and Arab foes that any increase in support for rebels would be futile.

The European Union is considering whether to amend sanctions on Syria to allow EU states to send weapons to the rebels and a U.S. Senate panel voted last week to arm them - though it is not clear whether any such bill could ever get through Congress.

"The message Hezbollah is trying to send is a signal that both Iran and Hezbollah are willing to match any increase in support to rebel groups," said Ayham Kamel, Middle East analyst at the consultancy Eurasia Group.

"If the conflict is expanded, Hezbollah and Iran are willing to support the regime no matter where it leads".

Nasrallah's comments also follow weeks of counter-offensives by Assad's forces around the capital, in the southern province of Deraa and around the town of Qusair on the Lebanese border, which have strengthened Assad's hand ahead of planned peace talks which Damascus says in principle it is ready to attend.

Kamel said Hezbollah's impact on the Syria's civil war was not as dramatic as believed in some Western capitals and that reorganizing Assad's armed forces, most likely on the advice of his international allies, to confront the rebels had been a greater factor behind his recent battlefield gains.

"There has been a strategic plan to restructure the Syrian military and its divisions to make them more effective for urban warfare and to establish new forces," he said referring to units which had been formed out of local militias and which together added up to additional forces of tens of thousands.

"The restructuring is important ... the additional forces have been important, and I'd put Hezbollah third on that list. All are indispensable for the regime, but there are different levels," Kamel said.

The number of Hezbollah fighters in Syria so far was likely to be in the "low thousands", Barnes-Dacey said, with plenty more in reserve. Nasrallah himself said on Saturday Hezbollah could summon "tens of thousands" with a couple of words.

"I don't think Hezbollah would leave themselves exposed in their own backyard to secure Assad, but clearly they have a significant fighting force and could increase what they are sending to Syria to quite a large degree before they have to make those choices," Barnes-Dacey said.

Assad's Western foes are already reluctant to commit to intervention in Syria or military support for the rebels, who include al Qaeda-linked groups equally hostile to the United States and Europe as they are to the Syrian president.

Closer to Syria, Assad's enemies are less constrained.

Sunni Muslims from the Lebanese port of Tripoli cross into Syria to fight Assad while their city itself has endured a week of fighting in which 25 people have been killed, showing how Syria's neighbors can simultaneously suffer from the spread of its conflict and further fuel the fighting within its borders.

"When Hezbollah sent fighters to Syria and occupied Sunni villages, that provoked the Sunnis," said Sunni Muslim preacher Sheikh Salem Rafei, referring to the area around the Syrian border town of Qusair where Hezbollah fighters and the Syrian army are waging a week-long assault to drive out rebels.

"Our brothers in Qusair appealed for our help, so it was our duty to call on those who could do so to perform jihad to support them," Rafei told Reuters in Tripoli.

Banners in a Tripoli square celebrating the "martyrdom" of local fighter Ahmad al-Shihab in Qusair highlight how the two towns are effectively twin battlegrounds in the same war. "There's no doubt that what is happening in Tripoli is an echo of what is happening in Syria, especially Qusair," Rafei said.

LEAVE LEBANON OUT

Both Rafei and Nasrallah urged Lebanese fighters to keep their battle within Syria, reflecting near universal anxiety in Lebanon to avoid a repeat of its ruinous 1975-1990 civil war.

"Those who want victory for the Syrian regime and those who want victory for the opposition should go and fight in Syria instead. Leave Tripoli to itself," Nasrallah said on Saturday.

Lebanon, a Mediterranean state of 4 million people, made up of a mosaic of Christian, Sunni and Shi'ite Muslim sects, is struggling to cope with an estimated million Syrians including refugees, labourers and their families.

Still saddled with a heavy debt burden from its post-war reconstruction and suffering a sharp slowdown in economic growth, Lebanon is also in political limbo after the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati two months ago.

Mikati's successor, Tammam Salam, has so far failed to form a new government and squabbling over a parliamentary electoral law means next month's election will be delayed - threatening the country with political vacuum.

Druze leader Walid Jumblatt said on Sunday parliament should be extended for at least a year, since political stability was a priority if Lebanon was to overcome its security challenges.

"There is still some minimal level of commitment by the mainstream Sunni Muslim, Shi'ite Muslim and Christian parties not to let Lebanon become a battleground," Kamel said. "But this has become a regional conflict, so the risk of uncalculated scenarios has gone up."

For now, Hezbollah's unquestioned military ascendancy in Lebanon itself means that the group which fought Israel to a standstill in a 34-day war seven years ago is unlikely to face a sustained challenge from domestic rivals.

But its deepening war in Syria may prove more challenging than anything it faced in three decades fighting Israeli troops, said Peter Harling of the International Crisis Group.

"Hezbollah will soon realise that this conflict is far bloodier than anything it has seen before. This is a very deadly conflict. If they go all in, they will have huge losses".

Formula for turning cement into 'metal'

May 27, 2013 ? In a move that would make the Alchemists of King Arthur's time green with envy, scientists have unraveled the formula for turning liquid cement into liquid metal. This makes cement a semi-conductor and opens up its use in the profitable consumer electronics marketplace for thin films, protective coatings, and computer chips.

"This new material has lots of applications, including as thin-film resistors used in liquid-crystal displays, basically the flat panel computer monitor that you are probably reading this from at the moment," said Chris Benmore, a physicist from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory who worked with a team of scientists from Japan, Finland and Germany to take the "magic" out of the cement-to-metal transformation. Benmore and Shinji Kohara from Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute/SPring-8 led the research effort.

This change demonstrates a unique way to make metallic-glass material, which has positive attributes including better resistance to corrosion than traditional metal, less brittleness than traditional glass, conductivity, low energy loss in magnetic fields, and fluidity for ease of processing and molding. Previously, only metals have been able to transition to a metallic-glass form. Cement does this by a process called electron trapping, a phenomena only previously seen in ammonia solutions. Understanding how cement joined this exclusive club opens the possibility of turning other solid normally insulating materials into room-temperature semiconductors.

"This phenomenon of trapping electrons and turning liquid cement into liquid metal was found recently, but not explained in detail until now," Benmore said. "Now that we know the conditions needed to create trapped electrons in materials we can develop and test other materials to find out if we can make them conduct electricity in this way."

The results were reported May 27 in the journal the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences in the article "Network topology for the formation of solvated electrons in binary CaO-Al2O3 composition glasses."

The team of scientists studied mayenite, a component of alumina cement made of calcium and aluminum oxides. They melted it at temperatures of 2,000 degrees Celsius using an aerodynamic levitator with carbon dioxide laser beam heating. The material was processed in different atmospheres to control the way that oxygen bonds in the resulting glass. The levitator keeps the hot liquid from touching any container surfaces and forming crystals. This let the liquid cool into glassy state that can trap electrons in the way needed for electronic conduction. The levitation method was developed specifically for in-situ measurement at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source by a team led by Benmore.

The scientists discovered that the conductivity was created when the free electrons were "trapped" in the cage-like structures that form in the glass. The trapped of electrons provided a mechanism for conductivity similar to the mechanism that occurs in metals.

To uncover the details of this process, scientists combined several experimental techniques and analyzed them using a supercomputer. They confirmed the ideas in experiments using different X-ray techniques at Spring 8 in Japan combined with earlier measurements at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source and the Advanced Photon Source.

Research was supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology of Japan, the Japan Science and Technology Agency, and the Academy of Finland.

Hermann has not considered resigning as Rutgers AD

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Julie Hermann is not resigning as Rutgers' incoming athletic director following a report that 16 years ago she humiliated and emotionally abused players while coaching Tennessee's women's volleyball team. And the university is standing behind her.

"I never considered withdrawing because I feel very qualified to lead Rutgers into the future and into the transition into the Big Ten," Hermann said Monday during a conference call in response to a report in the Star-Ledger of Newark. "And I do feel the support of the Rutgers community."

Embattled Rutgers President Robert Barchi said in a statement the university looks forward to her running the athletic department. He added that she was the best of the 63 candidates interviewed for the job of succeeding Tim Pernetti.

"Rutgers was deliberative at every stage of this process," Barchi said. "Over the course of the search, Julie's record established her as a proven leader in athletics administration with a strong commitment to academic success as well as athletic excellence, and a strong commitment to the well-being of student athletes.

Despite the Star-Ledger report, Barchi said Hermann's entire career is stellar and "we remain confident that we have selected an individual who will work in the best interests of all of our student athletes, our athletics teams, and the university."

Speaking to reporters on a conference call, Hermann denied having knowledge of a letter written by the 15 Tennessee players on the volleyball team. She said her former boss never heard of it and she never heard her former players make the allegation. Rutgers officials, however, have talked to her about it in recent days, she said.

Hermann acknowledged she was an intense coach and may have made a few mistakes handling her team. The 49-year-old administrator said she has matured and believes she is qualified to lead the scandal-marred Rutgers athletic program. Her first day on the job is June 17.

It was Hermann's first comments since the Star-Ledger's story Sunday revealed that the Tennessee volleyball team in 1996 sent a letter to the school in which the players said Hermann called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled."

In the past two days, state lawmakers have criticized Hermann's hire and Gov. Chris Christie has said he will speak with school officials about the report. Barring a resignation, only the university's board of governors can withdraw Hermann's appointment.

The governor, however, does appoint six of the board's 11 voting members and can wield pressure through a variety of ways, perhaps by threatening to cut school funding or refusing to renominate a board member who doesn't support his view.

With President Barack Obama scheduled to tour the New Jersey shore Tuesday to see the rebuilding that's been done the area after Hurricane Sandy, it is unlikely that Christie will turn his attention to Rutgers until Wednesday.

Hermann believes she can be an effective leader at Rutgers, which in the past two months fired its men's basketball for physical and verbal abuse, forced out its athletic director for his handling of the problem and had several other key officials resign. And after hiring former Scarlet Knights star Eddie Jordan to become the men's basketball coach, the university mistakenly called him a graduate when he had never finished his degree.

"All of my life has prepared me to lead this organization," said Hermann, who would be the first women athletic director at Rutgers and only the third female AD at the 124 schools playing at college football's top tier.

"Whatever mistakes you make as a young person, you've got to learn from them and go and grow," she added. "It is my intent to go to Rutgers with this vast experience of super highs and super lows and lead what I hope is an outstanding team into the Big Ten."

On other issues during a 10-minute call limited to eight questions:

?Hermann said the company that vetted her for Rutgers did ask about a lawsuit filed by one of her assistant coaches over a job termination.

? Hermann believes she can raise funds despite what has happened.

? Hermann denied the name calling, specifically when asked about calling the players "whores."

"That's not part of my vocabulary. ... Here's what I would say. Am I an intense coach? Absolutely an intense coach as many coaches are," she said. "But there is a big canyon between being super intense and abuse, and this was not an abusive environment for these women. Was it challenging? It was incredibly challenging. Was I aware that there were players that were unhappy? I was aware of that at the end of the season and I was unhappy."

Why Offline Businesses Need Online Marketing | Search Engine ...

image001

You have a local based brick and mortar business, so no reason to invest in online marketing, right? Location based businesses couldn?t be more wrong. Do not miss out on sales and customers by ignoring or avoiding online marketing.? One of the key principles of business is to be where your target audience is looking for you. A growing number of consumers are searching online before making a purchase decision, so your business needs to be there in order for them to find you and include your company in their decision making process.

According to the BIA/Kelsey ?report, 97% of consumers use online media before making local purchases.? Google Research ?showed that 9 out of 10 internet searches resulted in a follow up action, such as calling or visiting the business. Mobile searches triggered an additional action or conversion 73% of the time; and 28% of mobile searches resulted in a store visit or purchase. Since mobile searches are on the rise, this behavior is only going to continue to increase. How do consumers search for businesses?

  1. 90% use a search engine
  2. 48% use the online Yellow Pages
  3. 42% use comparison shopping websites

Embracing and online marketing can help you get the edge on your competition; especially when you take into consideration that a recent study? shows that 50% of small businesses? online listings are incorrect and 70% of small business owners state they do not have time to keep their online listings updated. Therefore, something as simple as updating and optimizing your online listings, including the Yellow Pages, will give your business the edge over the competition.

Four takeaways for brick and mortar businesses looking to take advantage of online marketing:

  1. With so much of your competition having an incorrect listing or nonexistent presence online, taking just a few minutes to fill in the data about your business in your online listing will make your business more visible to consumers searching for the products or services you sell, even if you do not sell anything online.
  2. Websites for your local business should include a responsive design so that it can be easily read via mobile devices. Especially considering that tablets will outsell PCs this year, and more than half of all cell phones are smartphones. What is responsive design? The Wikipedia definition of responsive design ??is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience?easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling?across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones)?. Mashable named 2013 The Year of Responsive Design and rightfully so with the growth of mobile search that results in visits to local businesses.
  3. Including online sign up for appointments or reservations on your website will increase conversions and also provide an added convenience of allowing them to make appointments online 24/7. Of the consumers surveyed, 19% made appointments with a local business through the business? website, that doesn?t include restaurant reservations; Cornell University research shows that over half of those surveyed made restaurant reservations online. If you do not have an online reservation system you have the potential to double your seatings.
  4. Embracing social media will allow you to keep connected with these new customers that are tech savvy; making customer retention easier. Get social with the community, build a following host events, and engage with local consumers in an effort to stay top of mind.

Do You Need Pre-Workout Supplements To Build Muscle? ? Hot ...

If you pick up any fitness magazine giving advice on how to build muscle fast one of the first things you will notice is the frequency of adverts for pre-workout supplements. Today we are going to look at how necessary these products actually are, to help you to determine whether they are worth your money.

If muscle building magazines are to be believed, then it?s hard to get any results in the gym unless you are packing the latest in pre-workout stimulants. Of course, this is more marketing hype than actual fact.

While the last three decades has seen countless improvements in our knowledge of fitness and nutrition, the basic rules of building a leaner, more powerful physique have remained largely untouched.

It is very, very easy to get lost in the world of bodybuilding supplements and so many fitness enthusiasts get caught up in the craze of buying the latest powders and shakes to enhance their results, but so few see returns to warrant the massive expenditure they are making.

The first step to understanding a particular supplement is to look at the main job it has.

Despite all of the scientific claims and references you might see on the flashy packaging, the actual job of a pre-workout supplement is really simple. It?s there to get your body pumped up before you hit the weights.

How are you supposed to know which one is the best with all of the choices available to you?

In order to stop yourself getting sucked in by the hype of every ?next big thing? to hit the supplement market you simply need to learn the basic ingredients and you?ll know what to look for the next time you see a product making bold statements about it?s capabilities.

Pre-workout supplements usually contain a big serving of N.O. boosters or caffeine, designed to ramp up your energy levels immediately before you hit the gym. The products often claim that they will increase your ability to experience muscular hypertrophy but in reality they do this indirectly. By increasing your energy, they are hoping you will be able to lift heavier weights or train with more intensity than usual, therefore increasing hypertrophy as a result. You?re still doing the work, it is not a miracle pill.

You have undoubtedly already seen the products which claim that they will give you skin splitting workouts and increase your raw power by over 250%?. The sad fact of the matter is, however, they have very little scientific research to back up their claims. Testing a particulal pre-workout supplement can become a case of trial and error, with something really pumping up one individual yet having very little effect on another.

While it is nice to boost your energy before any strenuous physical activity, there is a massive over-importance placed on the shoulders of pre-workout stimulants in today?s society. If you desire to learn how to build muscle you can definitely succeed without spending your hard earned cash on a caffeine supplement, despite the big claims it might make to you.

Brewers break Bucs' streak? |? Angels win again

By RICH ROVITO

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:35 p.m. ET May 24, 2013

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Poor starting pitching has been to blame for much of the Milwaukee Brewers' losing ways over the past few weeks. Marco Estrada worked to change that Friday night.

Estrada gave up one run over seven innings and retired the first 14 batters he faced in leading the Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Milwaukee had lost 16 of 20 games entering the contest, while the Pirates had a four-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the third time in 14 games

"He had great location today. His fastball was live. He really located it well," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "He pitched up when he needed to. He had a good breaking ball and a good changeup and commanded all of his pitches."

Estrada (4-2) didn't allow a hit until a two-out bloop single to left field by Neil Walker in the fifth inning. He struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. He fanned eight of 12 Pittsburgh batters at one point.

"I've been struggling a lot with my curveball. I felt like today that I threw a lot of them for strikes. I just built off of that," Estrada said. "I had really good fastball command and I had a lot of swings (and) misses on the changeup."

Roenicke opted to remove Estrada after seven innings.

"I didn't realize my pitch count was at 100. I wanted to go back out," Estrada said. "You always want to give more. I wish I could have thrown a complete game and given the bullpen a couple more days rest, but I gave the team a chance to win."

Estrada improved his career record to 5-0 against the Pirates, including eight starts.

"He didn't leave many balls over the plate," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He is tough on us. He is just able to step up and really get the ball in locations he wants to against us. Sure we had a couple balls to hit but it wasn't easy by any means."

Estrada said he's been attempting to mimic the fast-paced pitching of teammate Kyle Lohse.

"He just gets the ball and goes. He throws a lot of strikes," Estrada said. "Everyone is more alert. It showed today with the defense. I was so quick."

Four Brewers relievers combined to record the final six outs. Francisco Rodriguez retired the final batter to record his first save of the season and 295th of his career. Rodriguez's last save came last July 18.

Rodriguez entered the game after Brewers closer Jim Henderson sustained a right hamstring injury while attempting to field a hard grounder off the bat of Russell Martin.

"He felt his hamstring grab on him," Roenicke said. "We'll re-evaluate it tomorrow and see where we are. I don't think it's just going to be a day."

Roenicke said he's unsure if he'll name a closer if Henderson is out for an extended period.

"I don't know if we want to go with just one person. We may look at the matchups and see what they are every night," he said.

Rodriguez said he's prepared to close if called upon, but expressed concern for his injured bullpen mate.

"That's the last thing you want to see," Rodriguez said. "Jim's been doing such a good job and to see him go down like that is not good at all. Hopefully, we can have him as soon as possible."

Estrada outpitched Pirates starter A.J. Burnett (3-5), who gave up three hits and two earned runs over seven innings. Burnett struck out six and walked two. He retired 17 of the final 19 batters he faced. The Brewers managed just four hits for the game.

"Once I got some work in, I settled down and got to where I needed to be," Burnett said. "That is a heck of outing from both guys. You may beat me but you will never out-compete me."

The Brewers scored their only runs of the game in second inning. Aramis Ramirez led off the inning with a walk. After Martin Maldonado struck out, Carlos Gomez laced an opposite-field, line-drive double that just missed hitting Ramirez, who was leading off first base. Ramirez and Gomez scored on Alex Gonzalez's one-out double.

"That was big. It was a good pitch and Alex went down and got it. It was smart hitting," Roenicke said. "We certainly needed to get a lead and with the way Marco pitched we held on."

The Pirates didn't threaten until the sixth inning, when Starling Marte tripled down the left-field line with two outs. Estrada struck out Travis Snider to end the inning. Pittsburgh finally got to Estrada in the seventh when

Walker hit a two-out double, scoring Martin, who reached on a fielder's choice.

"(Estrada) made pitches when he had to. We didn't give ourselves enough opportunities to capitalize," Walker said. "When he has been really good, this is the game he throws."

Notes: Estrada laced an opposite-field single in the fifth inning, one of only three hits against Burnett. "He threw me a fastball and I'm pretty sure he missed. I just made contact and it found a hole," Estrada said. .The Brewers placed starting pitcher Hiram Burgos on the 15-day disabled list. Relief pitcher Tom Gorzelanny was reinstated from the DL. . Burnett entered the game with a National League-leading 79 strikeouts. The only other Pirate pitcher since 1900 to have at least 79 strikeouts by the end of May is Bob Veale, who had 81 in 1966. Burnett added six strikeouts to his season total Friday night .The game marked the start of stretch in which Milwaukee will play 20 games over 20 days. .Estrada threw 100 pitches, 73 for strikes. Burnett threw 99 pitches, 65 for strikes. .The Brewers won for the first time in 20 tries this season when scoring three or fewer runs.

5 Memorial Day Weekend Health Hazards

For many people Memorial Day weekend means finally getting to kick off summer by striking up the barbecue, taking a dip in the ocean or simply basking in the sunshine during a long weekend.

But celebrating the unofficial start of summer also means encountering a few hazards of the season. From sunburns to bug bites or even an ill-cooked hotdog, the summer months have a few perils to contend with. To help you avoid these pitfalls, we've put together a list of five health hazards for the summer months and how to avoid them.

Sunburns

After a long winter hibernation, it can be tempting to soak up as much sun as possible during a day at the beach or a picnic in the park, but experts warn that even a single sunburn can do lasting damage to the skin.

To enjoy the sun safely, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen, which protects against UVA and UVB rays, which has an SPF of 30 or higher.

Additionally, experts advise seeking shade from 10a.m. to 2p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest.

Unfortunately water and sand can amplify the sun's rays, so be extra-careful during trips to the beach. And be sure to reapply sun block every two hours or after taking a dip in the ocean.

If you do get a sunburn, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking a cool bath, popping a few aspirin or ibuprofen to help lessen the swelling and redness, and drinking lots of water since a sunburn draws fluid from the body.

Insects that Sting and Bite

One consequence of enjoying the great outdoors is being assailed by various stinging and biting insects that only a beekeeper outfit could keep at bay.

While many of these insects are merely a nuisance, for people who are allergic, they pose a clear and even deadly threat to their health. The American College of Allergies, Asthma and Immunology estimates that 2 million Americans are allergic to insect stings. That includes people who are at risk of having a potentially fatal reaction to the venom of certain insects.

More than 500,000 Americans end up in the hospital every year due to insect stings and bites, and they cause at least 50 known deaths a year.

Richard Pollack, a public health entomologist and instructor at the Harvard School of Public Health, says it's imperative for those who are allergic to insect stings to carry around an epi-pen, which can be used to easily inject epinephrine to help ease a severe allergic reaction.

"It does you no good to have it in your medicine cabinet if you're out and about [and get stung]," said Pollack.

In addition to life-threatening reactions from bee or wasp stings, warmer weather also means ticks will be actively looking for a host to feed off. Ticks can carry multiple diseases, including Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. In extremely rare cases their saliva can even lead to temporarily paralysis.

"If you're going to enjoy the outdoors, even just a backyard barbecue, you run some risk of acquiring a tick," said Pollack. "At the end of the day, do a tick check on yourself, children and even your pets."

In cases of paralysis caused by tick saliva, once the tick is removed the paralysis will quickly dissipate.

To keep insects at bay during the spring and summer months, Pollack recommends using an insect repellent when outdoors and putting screens over your windows to keep out pests such as mosquitoes.
