Dane-Elec ShareBytes

Note: Given the similarities in performance and design between the Dane-Elec ColorBytes and the Dane-Elec ShareBytes, the two reviews share some material.

At the risk of sounding like a grizzled curmudgeon, I still find myself surprised by the progressively younger age that children have begun using computers over the past few years. Alas, this is undeniably the case, and it therefore makes sense that a market exists for peripherals aimed exclusively towards youngsters. The Dane-Elec ShareBytes Value Pack drives ("ShareBytes") ($12.99 direct) fit squarely into this category. They're not the fastest or most durable flash drives by any measure, but they succeed in seamlessly fusing toy and technology, and kids will almost surely get a kick out of their cartoonish designs.

Design and Features
It doesn't take a team of behavioral scientists and several focus group studies to surmise that children like plastic and bright colors. Accordingly, the ShareBytes drives are constructed entirely out of plastic, including the USB plug. Children also tend to misplace things, so it makes sense that both sets feature capless designs, instead utilizing sliding USB connectors.

The ShareBytes set consists of two 4GB flash drives that symmetrically interlock by sliding into one another in a manner that looks like they're embracing one another; our test units featured two cartoonish monsters donning backpacks locked in a genial hug. Other available designs utilizing the hug motif include bacon and eggs, a devil and an angel, and robots as well as skeletons hugging each other, respectively. A side effect of this hug-inspired design is that the outstretched "arm" of the drives protrudes half an inch to the side and, in turn, crowds out neighboring ports.

On the plus side, the ShareBytes drives come with no preloaded software. On the other hand, that means that there's no encryption or password protection whatsoever. Ostensibly, this makes sense for drives designed for children. However, children old enough to understand computers are surely capable of memorizing simple passwords, and if I were a parent, I personally wouldn't feel terribly safe knowing that my child's personal documents and pictures could wind up in the hands of a random stranger with unfettered access to that data. Kids do lose things, after all. Careful parents would be better served by the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) . It's not the coolest or most cartoonish drive by any stretch, but it will give your children added protection ? and yourself some peace of mind.

Each ShareByte drive offers 4GB of storage space, with 3.79GB of usable space. They are sold in sets of two for a price of $12.99, coming to $1.63 per GB; according to these numbers each drive, therefore, costs $6.52. As a set the ShareBytes make for a better deal than the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives ($1.87 per gigabyte), the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it USB Drive ($1.83 per gigabyte), and the Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) ($1.75 per gigabyte). Only the Duracell Rugged USB Drive (16GB) is more affordable, at $1.25 per gigabyte.

Performance
Naturally, one shouldn't purchase a novelty flash drive intended for children and expect blazing fast performance. That said, the ShareBytes drives perform reasonably well compared to other flash drives in their price range. In our timed data transfer tests, they produced speeds of 4.3MBps (write) and 18.1MBps (read). This read speed outpaced that of the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives (4.4MBps write, 16.3MBps read) as well as that of Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it (6MBps write, 15MBps read). Moreover, the ValuePack drives outperformed the Duracell Rugged USB Drive (16GB) (4.1 MBps write, 12.5MBps read) on both write and read speeds. Only the DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB) (9.6MBps write, 24MBps read) outflanked the ShareBytes drives on both prongs.

In the end, the Dane-Elec ShareBytes Value Pack drives aren't the fastest or most rugged drives on the market, nor are they meant to be. They're designed to amuse children and add a little color to their nascent computer usage. Given their affordable price, they're also good for parents, too. Still, I'd advise parents to go with our current Editors' Choice for flash drives, the DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB), whose uncomplicated encryption program offers a level of security for children that, in my mind, far outweighs the need for bright colors and cute designs.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Dane-Elec ShareBytes with several other flash drives by side.

No press complaint over UK Prince Harry's naked pictures

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's royal family said on Friday it would not lodge a complaint with the country's press watchdog over the publication of photographs showing Prince Harry cavorting naked in a Las Vegas hotel room.

Pictures of the 27-year-old prince, third-in-line to the British throne, surfaced in August on a U.S. gossip website and were later published by the best-selling Sun tabloid - the only British title to run the photos.

Harry's office in St. James's Palace said the royals had decided not to pursue a formal complaint given the prince's current deployment in Afghanistan. It said it informed the Press Complaints Commission on Thursday.

By contrast, Harry's brother Prince William and his wife Kate launched a criminal complaint against the photographer who took topless pictures of her while the couple were on vacation in a French villa.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as the royal couple are formally known, were also seeking damages from French gossip magazine Closer, which first published the photos this month.

They have won an injunction banning the magazine from further publication and ordering it to hand the pictures over to the royal couple.

"Prince Harry is currently focused entirely on his deployment in Afghanistan, so to pursue a complaint relating to his private life would not be appropriate at this time and would prove to be a distraction," a statement from the palace said.

Harry, Queen Elizabeth's grandson, returned to Afghanistan this month to fly attack helicopters in the NATO-led war against Taliban insurgents.

"We remain of the opinion that a hotel room is a private space where its occupants would have a reasonable expectation of privacy," the palace said.

The naked photos proved an embarrassment for the family after a summer of well-received Diamond Jubilee celebrations to mark Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne and royal appearances at the London Olympics.

New fish species offers literal take on 'hooking up'

Friday, September 28, 2012

Fishing hooks aren't the only hooks found in east-central Mexican waters.

A new species of freshwater fish described by a North Carolina State University researcher has several interesting ? and perhaps cringe-inducing ? characteristics, including a series of four hooks on the male genitalia.

Females of the new species ? the llanos mosquitofish, or Gambusia quadruncus ? also have distinguishing characteristics, including a colorful anal spot.

A paper describing the new species, which lives in a diversity hotspot and seemingly branched off from its closest relative more than one million years ago, appears in the Journal of Fish Biology.

Dr. Brian Langerhans, assistant professor of biology at NC State and the lead author of the paper, says that these interesting characteristics may play important roles in mating control and success.

While more research is needed, Langerhans says that four-hooked genitalia on males can serve a purpose when females attempt to block or restrict mating attempts.

"Typically, reproduction is more costly in females, so females favor ways of reducing mating with 'lower quality' males," Langerhans says, "but reproduction is cheap in males and so selection favors ways of mating with as many females as possible. In Gambusia, some females, including G. quadruncus, have evolved modifications that appear to function as a blocking device ? essentially a big ball of tissue blocking most of the genital pore ? restricting entry of the male's gonopodial tip. Thus, the female would have to behaviorally allow the male to mate or the male would have to evolve a counter response to avoid this problem."

The four-hooked genitalia could be that counter-response, Langerhans says.

"Having four hooks on the gonopodium may provide a means of overcoming female resistance, latching on to the gonopore and transferring sperm in a manner that facilitates effective sperm transfer. Or it may serve to stimulate the female in a manner that causes responses in the female that facilitate effective sperm transfer," Langerhans says.

Somewhat similarly, the colorful anal spot on females appears to serve as a signal that only certain males are desired for mating.

"The differing, species-specific female anal spots appear to influence male mating behavior by signaling the location of the gonopore to the male, sometimes indicating the reproductive status of the female, and distinguishing fish of their own species from fish of other species to reduce costly cross-breeding, which can result in fish with reduced fitness," Langerhans says. "So it may be that G. quadruncus evolved different anal spots to help reduce interspecies matings and possible formation of hybrids."

BIR charges trading company with tax evasion for undeclared sales ...

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) today filed a criminal complaint with the Department of Justice against PKC INTERNATIONAL TRADING CORPORATION (PKC), its President JEREMY Z. KALAW, its Chief Operating Officer CHRISTIAN P. PINEDA, and Chief Financial Officer JOSEPH Z. KALAW for one (1) count of willful attempt to evade or defeat payment of Income Tax for taxable year (TY) 2011, three (3) counts of willful attempt to evade or defeat payment of Value Added Tax (VAT) for the first three quarters of TY 2011, one (1) count of willful failure to supply correct and accurate information in the Annual Income Tax Return (ITR) for TY 2011, and three (3) counts of willful failure to supply correct and accurate information in the VAT Returns for the first three quarters of TY 2011, all in violation of Section 254 and Section 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended (Tax Code).

PKC is a domestic corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission engaged in the business of trading of goods such as sheet metal fabricating machine, tooling and other related products on wholesale and retail basis with business address at UG-4 Cityland Pioneer Condominium, No. 128 Pioneer Street, Mandaluyong City.

The investigation of PKC stemmed from a confidential information received by the BIR from a bona fide informer denouncing the company for tax evasion by deliberately underdeclaring its true and correct sales despite huge business transactions with its customers and by not regularly issuing sales invoices/official receipts.

Records of investigation showed that PKC submitted to the BIR lists of Sales Invoices and Delivery Receipts indicating total sales in the amount?P42.14 million. Several PKC documents were also confiscated for failing to provide any entry in its books of accounts, in violation of the Tax Code.

Third Party Information provided by PKC customers ? Genesis Integrated Projects, Inc., Pacific Glass Corporation, EBC Fabricators, Inc., ShrinpackPhilipines Corporation and Cornersteel Systems Corporation ? disclosed the same amount of sales as reflected in the Sales Invoices and Delivery Receipts.

However, a comparison of the said amount (P42.14 million) with the declarations of PKC with the BIR revealed that PKC did not report its true and correct income. PKC underdeclared its sales by?P40.45 million (2,389%) by reporting gross sales amounting to only?P1.69 million in its ITR for TY 2011. It also underdeclared its sales in its VAT returns for the first three quarters of TY 2011 by?P41.16 million by reporting sales of only?P0.98 million.

For its acts and omissions in violation of the Tax Code, PKC was assessed an aggregate deficiency tax of?P27.63 million, inclusive of surcharges and interests, broken down as follows: Income Tax (TY 2011) ??P19.24 million; and VAT (first three quarters of TY 2011) ??P8.39 million.

The case?against PKC INTERNATIONAL TRADING CORPORATION (PKC), its President JEREMY Z. KALAW, its Chief Operating Officer CHRISTIAN P. PINEDA, and Chief Financial Officer JOSEPH Z. KALAW is the 128th?filed under the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program of the BIR under the leadership of Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares. It is likewise a RATE case of Revenue Region No. 7, Quezon City. (reytdlc)

Grandparenting with Grace: Grandparents raising grandchildren - Yes

Some days are just not fun. I am reminded again that I cannot control how each day will progress. I can plan, but more often than not, plans do not unfold as expected. Take this last Monday for example, I had some errands to run and then the afternoon was going to be spent at home getting a few things done and enjoying the beautiful day. However, my grandchild decided to have one melt-down after another,,,, until I had one of my own. Yes, I became as mature as the screaming, thrashing 3 year old in the back seat. Usually I can hold it together and talk her down from whatever set her off. Monday, nothing worked. Instead, after each burst of temper and emotion-another followed with her next breath. Nothing got done. To make matters worse we were in the car on the way to an appointment, which I canceled. Silly me, I had pulled over for her to watch two Bald Eagles on the side of the road--huge and majestic birds flying off, then returning to eat some road kill. The melt down was caused by not being able to see the road kill. Had I ignored the Eagles perhaps we could have avoided the melt down? Her first melt down that morning had been over not being able to hug and kiss the cats goodbye after their vet appointment before we left for the chiropractor (after dropping them off back at home), they were too quick getting out of their crates. No chiropractor, no groceries. We turned around and went home. Unfortunately it continued to be meltdown day. Every request, every correction was met with a meltdown. Finally I just put her to bed. She slept for 2 hours. Go figure, it was only 11:30 am, she had slept in til 8 am. I never thought she could be so tired. But, I was. Tired of the crying, screaming, demanding. Tired of trying so hard to get it right. Tired of holding everything together for everyone. Tired of wanting so much and having to settle for this--the muddling through of raising another child. I don't care what any expert tells me, or you, we never get it "right" (perfect) because all situations are different and each child unique. I know I was a better mother 20-30 years ago, no matter? the experience I have gained since. I wish I had that same energy and expectation I had back then, the hopefulness for the future. I have too much knowledge, too much experience and I am tired. Monday I was happy. Looking forward to the week, but Monday drained me and today I am still sad, grieving for HOPE.? She seems to have gotten away from me.

There is so much that needs to be done. Just the simple tasks of everyday life. I can't seem to get them done when I am drained by the demand for patience that is beyond what I have to give. My husband doesn't understand that once drained of patience, energy is not easily available to give to other tasks-or even enjoyable activities. For even my enjoyable activities demand patience. For example, sewing, interacting with my horses, teaching a Sunday school class, etc, etc. You get the picture here? There are days I have nothing left to give. I have nothing, I am an empty vessel crying out to be filled. I pray, read scripture. I cry and keep trying. But I am alone, so alone. Where can encouragement be found? I have asked for help, but there is none to be found. There are few to ask to give me a break. My friends are busy with their lives and do not like the interruption of a child during our conversations or visits, so these have become few. I know God must be at work in this, but it really feels like a long distance relationship. In addition, I have no rights, no authority. I am reminded of this constantly, being told I need the mother's signature- information cannot be released to me, even though I am the one bringing the child everywhere telling whoever what needs to be known. I say screw it. Each day I become a little more invisible, I fear one day I will cease even being able to see myself.

I also know I am dealing with feelings. Feelings change. I am wondering if tomorrow will bring something better than today. I am tired of being sad. I want to smile, to laugh to feel light and free to enjoy life. I want someone to tell me I am doing a great job. That they're proud of me and admire me for what I have undertaken. I want someone to come alongside of me and carry my cross for a few steps up the steep hill of life. I'd like some one to cry with me, understand my fears, and my insecurities. I am tired of having to hold it all in because no one wants to hear me speak of the pain. Because after all "Grand-parenting is so fun".

Perjury counts against ex-Penn State officials retained

Ex-Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley, left, and former university Vice President Gary Schultz lost their bid to have perjury counts dismissed arising from their testimony before a grand jury investigating child sex abuse against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

By NBC News and wire services

A judge in Pennsylvania on Wednesday rejected a bid by two former Penn State administrators to dismiss perjury charges against them arising from their testimony before a grand jury investigating child sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

In rejecting motions by former university Vice President Gary Schultz and ex-Athletic Director Tim Curley to dismiss the perjury counts against them, Dauphin County Judge Todd Hoover wrote that their contention that there is insufficient evidence to corroborate the charges will be more appropriately determined at trial. He also said prosecutors have given the defendants adequate information about which portions of their grand jury testimony are at the heart of the perjury charges.

Hoover did not rule on a motion by the defendants to dismiss the other count against them -- failure to properly report suspected child abuse. The judge indicated that he will issue a separate ruling on that motion, in which Shultz and Curley argue that the statute of limitations has expired.

Read the judge's ruling

Schultz, the school's former vice president for business and finance, has retired. Curley, the athletic director, is on leave from the university. Their trial is scheduled to begin in Harrisburg with jury selection on Jan. 7.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the defendants' lawyers did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Greek protest turns violent during general strike

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Police clashed with protesters hurling petrol bombs and bottles in central Athens Wednesday after an anti-government rally called as part of a general strike in Greece turned violent.

Riot police used tear gas and pepper spray against several hundred demonstrators after the violence broke out near the country's parliament. Protesters also set fire to trees in the National Gardens and used hammers to smash paving stones and marble panels to use as missiles against the riot police.

About 50,000 people joined the union-organized march in central Athens on Wednesday, held during a general strike against new austerity measures planned in the crisis-hit country. The action, the first large-scale walk-out since the country's coalition government was formed in June, closed schools and disrupted flights and most services.

Everyone from shopkeepers and pharmacists to teachers, customs workers and car mechanics joined the demonstration, seen as a test of public tolerance for more hardship after two years of harsh spending cuts and tax hikes.

"People, fight, they're drinking your blood," protesters chanted as they banged drums.

As the strike got under way Wednesday, Greece's prime minister and finance minister hammered out a ?11.5 billion ($14.87 billion) package of spending cuts demanded by the country's international lenders.

Greece's politicians have struggled to come up with more austerity measures that would be acceptable to its rescue creditors, with disagreements arising between the three parties that make up the coalition government. The country has been dependent on international loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since mid-2010. Without them, Greece would be forced into a chaotic default on its debts and possibly into an exit from the 17-country bloc that uses the euro.

The country's lenders have demanded more fiscal reforms if they are to continue issuing more rescue payouts. The next payment of ?31 billion hinges on the government agreeing to further cuts.

Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras and Prime Minister Antonis Samaras formulated a deal on the new ?11.5 billion austerity package for 2013-14, along with another ?2 billion in improved tax collection, a finance ministry official said Wednesday morning.

The other two party leaders were to be briefed by Samaras on Thursday, a party official said. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Wednesday's strike shut down the Acropolis, Greece's most famous tourist site, and halted flights for hours. Ferry services were suspended, schools, shops and gas stations were closed and hospitals were functioning on emergency staff.

One of those striking was Athens hospital worker Alkis Betses, who has seen his monthly salary fall from ?1,300 to ?800 (($1,680 to $1,035), says new cuts will bring it down to ?600 ($775).

"How can you survive on 600 a month, with ever-rising taxes, and continue to pay bills and buy necessary supplies?"

Betses said hospitals have been hard hit by spending cuts, with staff shortages and long delays in doctors' overtime pay for night shifts.

"The resentment has been there for long before the new measures. Imagine what will happen when they're made public," he said.

The rich colors of a cosmic seagull

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Nebulae are among the most visually impressive objects in the night sky. They are interstellar clouds of dust, molecules, hydrogen, helium and other ionised gases where new stars are being born. Although they come in different shapes and colours many share a common characteristic: when observed for the first time, their odd and evocative shapes trigger astronomers' imaginations and lead to curious names. This dramatic region of star formation, which has acquired the nickname of the Seagull Nebula, is no exception.

This new image from the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile shows the head part of the Seagull Nebula [1]. It is just one part of the larger nebula known more formally as IC 2177, which spreads its wings with a span of over 100 light-years and resembles a seagull in flight. This cloud of gas and dust is located about 3700 light-years away from Earth. The entire bird shows up best in wide-field images.

The Seagull Nebula lies just on the border between the constellations of Monoceros (The Unicorn) and Canis Major (The Great Dog) and is close to Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The nebula lies more than four hundred times further away than the famous star.

The complex of gas and dust that forms the head of the seagull glows brightly in the sky due to the strong ultraviolet radiation coming mostly from one brilliant young star -- HD 53367 [2] -- that can be spotted in the centre of the image and could be taken to be the seagull's eye.

The radiation from the young stars causes the surrounding hydrogen gas to glow with a rich red colour and become an HII region [3]. Light from the hot blue-white stars is also scattered off the tiny dust particles in the nebula to create a contrasting blue haze in some parts of the picture.

Although a small bright clump in the Seagull Nebula complex was observed for the first time by the German-British astronomer Sir William Herschel back in 1785, the part shown here had to await photographic discovery about a century later.

By chance this nebula lies close in the sky to the Thor's Helmet Nebula (NGC 2359), which was the winner of ESO's recent Choose what the VLT Observes contest. This nebula, with its distinctive shape and unusual name, was picked as the first ever object selected by members of the public to be observed by ESO's Very Large Telescope. These observations are going to be part of the celebrations on the day of ESO's 50th anniversary, 5 October 2012. The observations will be streamed live from the VLT on Paranal. Stay tuned!

###

[1] This object has received many other names through the years -- it is known as Sh 2-292, RCW 2 and Gum 1. The name Sh 2-292 means that the object is the #292 in the second Sharpless catalogue of HII regions, published in 1959. The RCW number refers to the catalogue compiled by Rodgers, Campbell and Whiteoak and published in 1960. This object was also the first in an earlier list of southern nebulae compiled by Colin Gum, and published in 1955.

[2] HD 53367 is a young star with twenty times the mass of our Sun. It is classified as a Be star, which are a type of B star with prominent hydrogen emission lines in its spectrum. This star has a five solar mass companion in a highly elliptical orbit.

[3] HII regions are so named as they consist of ionised hydrogen (H) in which the electrons are no longer bound to protons. HI is the term used for un-ionised, or neutral, hydrogen. The red glow from HII regions occurs because the protons and electrons recombine and in the process emit energy at certain well-defined wavelengths or colours. One such prominent transition (called hydrogen alpha, or H-alpha) leads to the strong red colour.

Where to Break the Fast in NY - Best Jewish Deli Food

For those of us who love food, Yom Kippur is a challenging holiday to say the least.? ?If you?re not Jewish, just imagine not eating or drinking anything at all for an entire day.? After fasting for 24 hours for this Jewish Day of Atonement, you might find yourself craving a humongous dinner. ?It??s a good idea to have a game plan once the sun sets on Wednesday night, so you don?t pass out from hunger. New York has some of the most famous Jewish delis in the world: Russ and Daughters, Barney Greengrass, and Katz?s are all equipped to cater your dinner of whitefish, lox, smoked sturgeon, and chopped liver on bagels, bialys and rye bread. Kutsher?s Tribeca has an entire menu ?dedicated to breaking your fast on Yom Kippur, featuring luxe latkes topped with caviar and a 36-ounce kosher bone-in rib eye. ?Or you can indulge another Jewish tradition and go for not-so-traditional Dim Sum, the likes of pastrami egg rolls at Red Farm. If you?re in the mood for something irreverent (i.e. not kosher), Traif in Williamsburg has a cheeky menu for pork and shellfish loving Jews (myself included). There?s no shortage of great places to break your fast this Yom Kippur. ?Here are some of our favorites, from the traditional to the unexpected.

Barney Greengrass
Address: 541 Amsterdam Ave., btwn W.86th & W.87th Sts.
Phone: (212) 724-4707
Website:
www.barneygreengrass.com
Where else to break fast than Barney Greengrass, the ultimate Jewish deli that?s been serving New Yorkers for 100 years (83 years in the same location!)?? This Upper West Side institution is the perfect place to pick up platters for the family gathering. ?It closes at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, so you?ll have to plan ahead to break your fast later in the evening with Barney Greengrass? legendary smoked fish, and bagels. ?(They?re famous for their caviar if you feel like ushering in the New Year with a bang!)? A deluxe platter comes with smoked sturgeon, Nova Scotia salmon, kippered salmon, sable and whitefish for $95, and is served with potato salad or coleslaw and all the traditional fixings. ?Throw some Dr. Brown?s Cel-Ray soda on the pile and you?ll be in smoked fish heaven.

Red Farm
Address: 529 Hudson St., btwn Charles and W. 10th Sts.
Phone: (212) 792-9200
Website: www.redfarmnyc.com
Coming in at a close second in Jewish dining traditions is the love of Chinese food. ?While it?s not typical to break the fast with dim sum, you might want to start a new tradition this year.? Besides, when you consider the fact that owner Ed Schoenfeld is a Chinese food loving Jew himself, it?s entirely appropriate. ?We think Katz?s pastrami egg rolls are a perfect, new beginning.?? This ain?t your average dim sum. There?s pan-fried lamb dumplings, shrimp and snow pea leaf dumpling. And very un-kosher pork and crab dumplings. ?Of course, there?s non dim sum offerings, like grilled and saut?ed beef ribs and Chinese broccoli with superior shitake ?flower? mushrooms. ?Toast to your fast with a Red Farm Manhattan (Bulleit Rye, sweet vermouth, agave nectar, bitters) and you?re ready to tackle the New Year.

Katz?s Delicatessen
Address: 205 East Houston St., btwn Ludlow and Orchard Sts.
Telephone: (212) 254-2246
Website: katzdelicatessen.com
Not only does Katz?s serve perhaps what is one of the best pastrami sandwiches in the world, the restaurant has become a quintessential part of New York culture since it opened on the Lower East Side in 1888. (See the Meg Ryan scene in When Harry Met Sally.) The family-run business offers a high-holiday menu at $25.95 per person or dinner for 10 for $319.95. ?Orders for Katz?s catered meals must be placed one day in advance, and they include your choice of roast chicken, sliced brisket, roast turkey, matzo ball soup, stuffed cabbages, smoked fishes, chopped liver, challah, and more. ?If you?d rather dine in at Katz?s, wait at the counter and order Katz?s special egg cream, which pretty much tastes like heaven on earth,? and take in the old school d?cor.

Kutsher?s Tribeca
Address: 186 Franklin St. btwn Hudson and Greenwich Sts.
Phone: (212) 432-0606
Website: www.kutsherstribeca.com
If you?re looking for something a little more chic, there?s a new breed of Jewish deli in town. ?Kutsher?s, a self-described ?Jewish-American bistro,? offers a fancified take on traditional Jewish cuisine. For Yom Kippur, Kutsher?s has prepared a special ?Break Fast? menu of traditional dishes divided into meat and dairy. For starters, there?s duck borscht, caviar-capped latkes or matzo brei. We?re especially excited about ?The Works? smoked fish platter and The Delicatessen platter, which includes Kutsher?s own housemade pastrami, smoked veal tongue, spicy salami, duck pastrami, and chopped liver, all served with rye bread, mustard, pickles, and horseradish aioli. ?If that?s not your guy, try the kosher, dry-aged ?bone-in 36-ounce rib eye, served with hand-cut fries, for $49 per person. The Yom Kippur dinner menu will be available Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., or they?ll happily cater your at-home feast for you.

Mile End Deli
Address: 87A Hoyt St., btwn Pacific St. and Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn
Telephone: (718)852-7510
Website: www.mileendbrooklyn.com
It?s not often that a deli takes a city by storm, but with its delicious smoked meats and imported bagels, this Boerum Hill spot has just done that. ?They?re so hot right now that they just opened an unexpectedly stylish sandwich shop in downtown Manhattan and released a cookbook to boot.? (Plans for world domination are underway.) The focus at Mile End is Montreal-style Jewish cooking, so in addition to delicious smoked meats and fish, you can find the Canadian delicacy poutine, fries with cheese curds, and mushroom gravy, i.e. the perfect thing to break a fast. ?After sunset on Wednesday head to Mile End for a sandwiches to-go, like their now famous, cured and smoked beef brisket served on house-baked rye with mustard, or sit down for dinner and enjoy the veal schnitzel, with heirloom carrots, sunchokes, and brandied prunes.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor
Address: 13 Doyers St. near Bowery
Telephone: (212) 962-6047

Website: www.nomwah.com
Another option for great Dim Sum is Nom Wah Tea Parlor, serving standout dumplings and more in Chinatown since 1920. ?Nothing on the menu is over $10, so you can eat to your heart?s content, which is exactly what you?ll want to do after abstaining from food and drink for 24 hours. ?The dim sum is made to order, so it comes out of the kitchen perfectly fresh and piping hot. ?Sample their shrimp and snow leaf dumplings ($3.50), egg rolls and fluffy pork buns, just $1 each while you sip on tea from the mismatched tea cup collection and relish this New York gem.

Russ and Daughters
Address: 179 East Houston St., btwn Allen and Orchard Sts.
Telephone: (212) 475-4880
Website: www.russanddaughters.com
If after fasting the first thing on your mind is a bagel and the second thing on your mind is lox, you?ll want to get to yourself (as fast as you can) to Russ and Daughters, a legendary New York deli with top-notch smoked everything. ??Ever had kippered wild white king salmon or pickled lox?? We hadn?t either until we christened our palettes here. ??There?s smoked salmon tartare, peppered mackerel, pastrami cured salmon and so much more. ?Save room for dessert because they make a mean Chocolate and Cinnamon Babka, and Chocolate-Dipped Macaroons.? It?s too late to place an order, but it?s not too late to break your fast here. Just grab a spot in line close to sun set and get your dinner fresh that day

Traif
Address: 229 S. 4th St., btwn Havemeyer and Roebling Sts., Brooklyn
Telephone: (347) 884-9578
Website: www.traifny.com
If you?re in the market for an irreverent place to break your fast this Yom Kippur, Traif?s your guy.? Named for the Hebrew word for ?not kosher,? the restaurant specializes in pork and shellfish and is located right on the border between hipster Williamsburg and Hasidic Williamsburg.? You gotta love a restaurant with a sense of humor, especially when it?s turning out such smart small plates, like Berkshire pork belly served with rhubarb, grapefruit, blackberries and sugar snap peas or seared foie gras with fingerlings and ham chips. And for dessert? Two words: bacon doughnuts.

New strategy for battling HIV

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? New research showing how the HIV virus targets "veterans" or memory T-cells could change how drugs are used to stop the virus, Mason researchers say.

The research will appear in the Journal of Biological Chemistry's October edition and currently is available online.

"It's a big breakthrough for us," says Yuntao Wu, an author of the study and professor at the Mason-based National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases. "I think this will impact the field."

Helper T-cells support the body's immune system by organizing forces to fight off infection. The HIV virus hijacks helper T-cells. When helper T-cell numbers plummet, the body is vulnerable to disease.

Not all helper T-cells are the same; some are experienced ones called memory helper T-cells, and others, naive cells or "virgin" cells, haven't encountered an infection. Mason researchers studied why HIV preferentially goes after memory helper T-cells, while shunning their close colleagues. Memory and naive T-cells appear similar.

"In the body, HIV is able to kill most memory helper cells," says Weifeng Wang, PhD Biosciences '12, the study's main author. "We wanted to pursue what makes the difference between memory and naive T-cells on a molecular level."

Unlike naive helper T-cells, memory T-cells are on the go, and much more mobile. And it's that momentum that attracts the HIV virus and makes the memory cell vulnerable, says Wang, who's currently a research fellow in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School.

When a memory cell moves, inside the cell, it looks like a waterfall on the moving edge. "It's called 'treadmilling'," Wu says. "The cytoskeleton or the cell's supporting bone is acting like a muscle. The treadmilling of cytoskeleton pushes the cell to migrate. That's how it pushes itself. In the past year we've been studying how HIV infects those memory cells. It has to go to the center, into the nucleus. It has to go past the cytoskeleton barriers to go into the center. For many years we didn't understand how the virus could cross such a structure. It's like a wall. It has to cross that wall."

HIV jumps over the wall by exploiting the cell's treadmilling process, Wu says. "The HIV virus uses a receptor to attach to the cell for entry," he says. "When the virus touches that receptor it's like someone ringing the doorbell. That triggers a signal -- someone comes out and opens the door. Now the HIV virus can start the treadmill to 'walk' along the cytoskeleton towards the center. If the virus goes to naive cells, it cannot do it. Naive cells aren't sensitive enough. The cytoskeleton of these 'virgin' cells is different from the memory cells, and it is not easy for the virus to start the treadmilling process."

HIV's ability to mutate makes it difficult for our body to control it. "It can mutate very fast," Wu says. "You may have a lot of memory cell soldiers there but they are not able to recognize the HIV virus. They remember one guy, but this guy changes his face so they don't remember him. That's why our immune system is not effective against HIV. On top of that, the virus kills lots of your memory helper cells. Without sufficient help, your immune system is in complete dysfunction, and now you don't have an immune system."

HIV's knack for mutating makes it a tough target for drugs, Wang says. By shifting the focus to the cell, away from the virus itself, researchers may find a new way to tackle the virus, he says.

"Basically, our new strategy will be finding a cellular target, something HIV needs to depend on," Wu says. "It's as if the virus says 'give me a house.' The cell is the house. The house has to have electricity and everything so it can live there. Our approach is to look for something the virus needs to live in that house and then to reduce it or shut it down. The challenge will be if you shut that down, that it doesn't impact normal cell functions. It's a very tricky balance. You want to kill the virus but not healthy cells along with it."

Wu is looking at existing drugs, including those used for cancer. "There is something shared between cancer cells and HIV- infected cells because cancer cells also like to migrate. So some drugs that are used to slow down cancer migration could also be used to treat HIV."

As part of his doctoral thesis, Wang spent six years pursuing why HIV attacks memory cells. Failure is a part of research, he says. He had to change the experiment conditions multiple times before finding success. "It's like when you get lost in the woods at night; it's difficult to find the way out."

Mentors and colleagues spurred Wang on. Sheer persistence and hours in the lab eventually won out. "It's very challenging to do scientific discovery," Wang says. "There is no precedent."

NYC DC AIDS Research Ride partially funded the research for three years, Wu says. Also, a $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, is slated for the project from June 2009 until May 2013.

Huawei's building its own mobile operating system 'just in case' there's trouble ahead

Huaweis firsthalf 2012 financials

Huawei's boss must have been a Boy Scout, since he's taken its "be prepared' motto deeply to his heart. CEO Wan Biao has told Reuters that his company is working on its own mobile OS just in case its partners "won't let us use their system[s] one day." We don't expect to ever see the software, but given the fractious nature of the business, it's more likely to be a barbed hint at Google and Microsoft to keep sending flowers and chocolates to Shenzhen. That said, given that local rival ZTE is building phones with Firefox's OS, we'd politely suggest that it rescues another beloved OS from the clutches of HP's indifference.

Iranian president dismisses war threats

NEW YORK (AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday dismissed threats of military action against Iran's nuclear program, asserting that his country's project to enrich uranium is only for peaceful purposes and disputing that the country worries at all about an Israeli attack to destroy Iran's nuclear capacity.

Speaking to a group of editorial leaders, the first full day of his visit to New York for the annual U.N. General Assembly, Ahmadinejad said it was not too late for dialogue with the United States to resolve differences.

He also said that Iran is neutral in the Syrian civil war, and denied that Tehran is providing weapons or training to the government of President Bashar Assad. "We like and love both sides, and we see both sides as brothers," he said. He referred to the conflict in Syria as "tribal" fighting and said that international "meddling from the outside has made the situation even harder." He refused to say whether Iran would accept a government not led by the Assad regime, which for years has been Iran's closest ally in the Middle East.

It was Ahmadinejad's eighth visit to the U.N. gathering held each September, which he cited as proof that he is open to understanding other countries' views.

In spite of his assertions on the importance of dialogue and respect for others, Ahmadinejad presented a hard line in many areas. He refused to speak of the state of Israel by name and instead referred only to the "Zionists," and when asked about author Salman Rushdie he made no attempt to distance himself from recent renewed threats on the author's life emanating from an Iranian semi-official religious foundation. "If he is in the U.S., you should not broadcast it for his own safety," Ahmadinejad said.

He said this would be his last trip to New York as president of Iran, because his term is ending and he is barred from seeking a third consecutive term. But he did not rule out staying active in Iranian politics and said he might return as part of future Iranian delegations to New York.

"Fundamentally, we do not take seriously threats of the Zionists," Ahmadinejad said. "We believe the Zionists see themselves at a dead end and they want to find an adventure to get out of this dead end. While we are fully ready to defend ourselves, we do not take these threats seriously."

He also sought to delegitimize Israel's historic ties to the Middle East and their political and military power in the region and the world, saying that Israelis "do not even enter the equation for Iran."

On the other hand, he said the argument over Iran's nuclear program was a political rather than a legal matter and needs to be resolved politically.

"We are not expecting that a 33-year-old problem between America and Iran to be resolved in speedy discussions, but we do believe in dialogue."
