AP Source: Kidd to discuss Nets' coaching job

MIAMI (AP) ? Jason Kidd is interested in the Brooklyn Nets' coaching position and plans to talk to the team this week, a person familiar with the situation said Sunday.

Kidd led the Nets to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002-03 as a player and is interested in replacing P.J. Carlesimo, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team is not discussing its search.

The recently retired point guard's interest was first reported by Yahoo Sports.

The 40-year-old Kidd ended his career last week after a season with the Knicks, his 19th in the NBA. He is second on the career list in assists and steals, and is the Nets' franchise leader in most playoff statistical categories.

Kidd, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, has long been considered one of the NBA's smartest players, and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he would be capable of handling the transition to coaching.

"Well, you know, I think of course it's an individual thing, but when you've played in the league as long as Jason has and played for a number of coaches, he's pretty much seen everything that the NBA can offer. So he does have experience," Popovich said before Game 2 of the finals.

Popovich tried to sign Kidd away from the Nets a decade ago, believing he could help mentor point guard Tony Parker.

"If he's crazy enough to want to be a head coach in the league, I wish him all the best," Popovich said. "But he certainly has the intuitive skills to know what's going on out there. Obviously, he would be able to have relationships with the players that he's had with his coaches throughout."

Kidd had two years left on his contract when he retired after a difficult postseason. He played 6? years for the Nets when they were based in New Jersey and is friendly with Nets point guard Deron Williams.

Carlesimo led the Nets to a 49-33 record after replacing the fired Avery Johnson in December. The Nets told him he wouldn't be retained after losing to Chicago in the first round of the playoffs.

Extras again: Marlins beat Mets 8-4 in 10 innings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Half the innings, twice the fun.

As far as the Miami Marlins are concerned, the headline can be "Extra! Extra! Read all about it." A day after beating the New York Mets in 20 innings, they needed only 10.

Derek Dietrich hit a tying home run in the eighth and second baseman Daniel Murphy's 10th-inning error allowed Logan Morrison to score the go-ahead run in his first game in 11 months, boosting the Marlins to an 8-4 victory and a two-game sweep.

"I'd rather win in nine, but I guess anything less than 20 is good," Miami manager Mike Redmond said.

Morrison singled off Bobby Parnell (4-3) leading off the 10th and went to second on Justin Ruggiano's single. Adeiny Hechavarria, whose 20th-inning single was the difference Saturday, failed in two bunt attempts, then hit a potential-double play grounder to Murphy.

Preparing for a quick throw to second, Murphy allowed the ball to skip off his glove and into right field.

"I missed it," Murphy said. "Tough for me to speak about the whole team. I can speak for myself: Frustrated."

Recovered from right knee surgery, Morrison played his first big league game since July 28.

"Got goose bumps during the national anthem. Felt like my first day in the big leagues again," he said.

Morrison also contributed in the eighth, when he was running from second to third and got hit on the right ankle by Hechavarria's grounder, preventing a potential double play. Hechavarria was awarded a single, and Morrison was out.

"Dumbest smart guy in the world," Morrison said.

Greg Dobbs widened the 10th-inning lead with sacrifice fly off Rob Carson, and Miguel Olivo followed with a two-run homer.

No need to repeat Saturday's 6-hour, 25-minute marathon, won by the Marlins 2-1. This one lasted "just" 3:35 and there were 333 pitches, bringing the two-game total to 894.

The last-place Marlins had a season-high 17 hits to six for the Mets. They rallied from a 4-1 deficit and improved their record against New York this year to 8-3. Miami is 10-41 against other teams.

"I can tell we like playing the Mets," said Dietrich, whose five home runs this year have all either tied the score or put the Marlins ahead.

It was the first time in 24 years that teams played a game of 20 innings or more, then went extras again the next day, according to STATS. The Houston Astros beat the Dodgers 5-4 in 22 innings at the Astrodome on June 3, 1989, a game that ended with Fernando Valenzuela playing first base for Los Angeles, then won 7-6 in 13 innings the following day.

And it was the first time since the Angels beat Seattle on April 13-14, 1982, that a team won consecutive games that went exactly 20 innings and then 10.

Chad Qualls (1-0) got his first win since July 13 last year, striking out Justin Turner and Anthony Recker with the potential winning run on base in the ninth.

After the game, New York demoted first baseman Ike Davis, Carson and outfielder Mike Baxter to Triple-A.

"It's tough to sit through 30 innings and score not even a handful of runs," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "So it's been frustrating for everybody. I'm sure it was frustrating for our fans, too."

Jonathon Niese, pitching for the first time since May 27 after skipping a turn due to a sore left shoulder, allowed three runs ? two earned ? and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings. Dietrich tied the score 4-all when he homered off Scott Rice leading off the eighth.

Tom Koehler remained winless in seven career starts and 20 appearances, giving up four runs and six hits in seven innings for Miami. The 26-year-old right-hander was born in the Bronx and went to nearby New Rochelle High School and then Stony Brook University.

He was 0 for 10 at the plate before singling down the left-field line in the seventh for his first big league hit. He had about 100 family members and friends at Citi Field.

"All of a sudden, you look up and you could see them cheering you on when you're walking off the field or walking out there to stretch," Koehler said.

He leaked runs early but didn't break.

Hechavarria put Miami ahead with a run-scoring single in the second, but Murphy homered leading off the bottom half and David Wright hit a two-run double in the third, which also included Murphy's RBI grounder.

Marcell Ozuna had an RBI double off the center-field wall with two on in the sixth, and another run scored when Juan Lagares dropped the ball while transferring it from his glove to his throwing hand for an error.

While the Marlins have the worst record in the majors, they're champions against the Mets.

"We don't have a lot of wins, but we've earned every single one of them," Redmond said. "Hopefully we can build off this momentum."

NOTES: Koehler has two walks in 84 at-bats against right-handed hitters. ... Miami was without OF Chris Coughlan, put on the disabled list with nerve irritation in his right calf. RF Giancarlo Stanton, who hasn't played since April 29 because of a strained right hamstring, could be activated Monday. ... Marlins 1B Casey Kotchman missed the game because of a tight oblique muscle. ... RHP Ricky Nolasco starts Miami's series opener against Milwaukee on Monday. RHP Kevin Slowey will be pushed back to Wednesday following his seven-inning relief effort Saturday, and RHP Jacob Turner will start Tuesday.

Report: NSA contract worker is surveillance source

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A 29-year-old contractor who claims to have worked at the National Security Agency and the CIA was revealed Sunday as the source of disclosures about the U.S. government's secret surveillance programs, risking prosecution by the U.S. government.

The leaks have reopened the post-Sept. 11 debate about privacy concerns versus heightened measure to protect against terrorist attacks, and led the NSA to ask the Justice Department to conduct a criminal investigation into the leaks.

The Guardian, the first paper to disclose the documents, said it was publishing the identity of Edward Snowden, a former technical assistant for the CIA and current employee of defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, at his own request.

"My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them," Snowden told the newspaper.

Stories in The Guardian and The Washington Post published over the last week revealed two surveillance programs.

One of them is a phone records monitoring program in which the NSA gathers hundreds of millions of U.S. phone records each day, creating a database through which it can learn whether terror suspects have been in contact with people in the U.S. The Obama administration says the NSA program does not listen to actual conversations.

Separately, an Internet scouring program, code-named PRISM, allows the NSA and FBI to tap directly into nine U.S. Internet companies to gather all Internet usage ? audio, video, photographs, emails and searches. The effort is designed to detect suspicious behavior that begins overseas.

Snowden said claims the programs are secure are not true.

"Any analyst at any time can target anyone. Any selector. Anywhere. Where those communications will be picked up depends on the range of those sensor networks and the authority that that analyst is empowered with," Snowden said, in accompanying video on the Guardian's website. "Not all analysts have the power to target anything. But I, sitting at my desk, had the authority to wiretap anyone, from you or your accountant to a federal judge to even the president if I had a personal email."

He told the Post that he would "ask for asylum from any countries that believe in free speech and oppose the victimization of global privacy" in an interview from Hong Kong, where he is staying.

"I'm not going to hide," Snowden told the Post. "Allowing the U.S. government to intimidate its people with threats of retaliation for revealing wrongdoing is contrary to the public interest."

The Post declined to elaborate on its reporting about Snowden.

Spokespeople for the White House, the Director of National Intelligence, NSA and CIA did not have immediate comment on the disclosures, nor would they confirm whether Snowden worked at the U.S. intelligence agencies.

In a statement, Booz Allen confirmed that Snowden "has been an employee of our firm for less than 3 months, assigned to a team in Hawaii." The statement said if the news reports of what he has leaked prove accurate, "this action represents a grave violation of the code of conduct," and the company promised to work closely with authorities on the investigation.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has decried the revelation of the intelligence-gathering programs as reckless and said it has done "huge, grave damage." In recent days, he took the rare step of declassifying some details about them to respond to media reports about counterterrorism techniques employed by the government.

Snowden told The Guardian that he lacked a high school diploma and enlisted in the U.S. Army until he was discharged because of an injury, and later worked as a security guard with the NSA.

He later went to work for the CIA as an information technology employee and by 2007 was stationed in Geneva, Switzerland, where he had access to classified documents.

During that time, he considered going public about the nation's secretive programs but told the newspaper he decided against it, because he did not want to put anyone in danger and he hoped Obama's election would curtail some of the clandestine programs.

He said he was disappointed that Obama did not rein in the surveillance programs.

"Much of what I saw in Geneva really disillusioned me about how my government functions and what its impact is in the world," he told The Guardian. "I realized that I was part of something that was doing far more harm than good."

Snowden left the CIA in 2009 to join a private contractor, and spent last four years at the NSA, as a contractor with consulting giant Booz Allen Hamilton and, before that, Dell.

The Guardian reported that Snowden was working in an NSA office in Hawaii when he copied the last of the documents he planned to disclose and told supervisors that he needed to be away for a few weeks to receive treatment for epilepsy.

He left for Hong Kong on May 20 and has remained there since, according to the newspaper. Snowden is quoted as saying he chose that city because "they have a spirited commitment to free speech and the right of political dissent", and because he believed it was among the spots on the globe that could and would resist the dictates of the U.S. government.

"I feel satisfied that this was all worth it. I have no regrets," Snowden told The Guardian, which said he asked to be identified after several days of interviews.

Snowden could face decades in a U.S. jail for revealing classified information if he is successfully extradited from Hong Kong, said Mark Zaid, a national security lawyer who represents whistleblowers. Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the United States that took force in 1998, according to the U.S. State Department website.

"If it's a straight leak of classified information, the government could subject him to a 10 or 20 year penalty for each count," with each document leaked considered a separate charge, Zaid said.

Snowden told the newspaper he believes the government could try to charge him with treason under the Espionage Act, but Zaid said that would require the government to prove he had intent to betray the United States, whereas he publicly made it clear he did this to spur debate.

The government could also make an argument that the NSA leaks have aided the enemy ? as military prosecutors have claimed against Army Pvt. Bradley Manning, who faces life in prison under military law if convicted for releasing a trove of classified documents through Wikileaks.

"They could say the revelation of the (NSA) programs could instruct people to change tactics," Zaid said. But even under the lesser charges of simply revealing classified information, "you are talking potentially decades in jail, loss of his employment and his security clearance."

Officials said the revelations were dangerous and irresponsible. House intelligence committee member Peter King, R-NY, called for Snowden to be "extradited from Hong Kong immediately...and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," in an interview with The Associated Press Sunday.

"I believe the leaker has done extreme damage to the U.S. and to our intelligence operations," King said, by alerting al-Qaida to U.S. surveillance, and by spooking U.S. service providers who now might fight sharing data in future with the U.S. government, now that the system has been made public.

King added that intelligence and law enforcement professionals he'd spoken to since the news broke were also concerned that Snowden might be taken into custody by Chinese intelligence agents and questioned about CIA and NSA spies and policies.

"To be a whistleblower, there would have to be a pattern of him filing complaints through appropriate channels to his supervisors," said Ambassador John Negroponte, the first director of national intelligence, in an interview with the AP Sunday. "For me, it's just an outright case of betrayal of confidences and a violation of his nondisclosure agreement."

President Barack Obama, Clapper and others have said the programs are authorized by Congress and subject to strict supervision of a secret court.

"It's important to recognize that you can't have 100 percent security and also then have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience," Obama said. "We're going to have to make some choices as a society."

Iraq's PM visits Kurdish north to melt ice

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq's Prime Minister on Sunday made a rare visit to the country's self-ruled northern Kurdish region in a bid to melt the ice between the Kurds and the Shiite-led central government in Baghdad, as a suicide attack in Baghdad claimed the lives of seven people.

The visit came as authorities said a border guard was killed and two others were wounded in clashes along the Syrian border, in the latest sign that the Syrian civil war risks spilling over into Iraq.

Nouri al-Maliki held a Cabinet meeting in Irbil ? the first in the Kurdish regional capital since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein ? as part of an initiative started last year to better understand the needs of the provinces. Al-Maliki and government ministers arrived by military plane, where they were received on a red carpet by the region's president, Massoud Barzani.

Barzani leads the Kurds' largely autonomous and increasingly prosperous northern region, which has multiple government ministries, its own security forces and other trappings of an independent state. It remains part of Iraq, however, and relies heavily on a share of the federal budget controlled by Baghdad to meet its budget needs.

Arguments over dueling claims to the oil-rich city of Kirkuk and other disputed territories running along the Kurdish region's border with the rest of Iraq are one of the most serious threats to Iraq's stability. An exchange of fire in one disputed city in November led both sides to send military reinforcements and heavy weapons into the contested area.

The Kurds have signed dozens of oil exploration deals with foreign energy companies over Baghdad's objections, including U.S. oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp., and Total S.A. of France. The central government does not recognize the Kurdish agreements, which offer more generous terms than its own. It believes it should manage the country's oil policy and wants all exports to travel through state-run pipelines.

The Kurds are working on a pipeline to ship oil produced in their region into neighboring Turkey and earlier this year began trucking oil across their northern border, prompting charges of smuggling and threats of lawsuits from Baghdad.

Immediate solutions to pending issues are not expected during al-Maliki's visit, the first since 2010 when Iraqi politicians converged to end a months-long dispute over establishing the government after national elections produced no clear winner.

Iraq's state TV aired part of the meeting as al-Maliki was calling on Iraqis to come together so that they can face what he called "the danger" brought on by regional unrest mainly in neighboring Syria where Sunni-led rebels have been fighting for more than two years to topple Bashar Assad.

Fears are growing that the ongoing fighting in Syria could further destabilize Shiite-led Iraq's already fragile security. Predominantly Sunni rebels in Syria, including the al-Qaida affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, or the Nusra Front, are fighting to try to topple Syrian Assad. His Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam and is backed by Shiite powerhouse Iran.

"The region is going through a new strong storm, a sectarian storm, a storm of political challenges and a storm of confusions in many countries in the region based on different reasons," al-Maliki said. "The most dangerous one is the comeback of the extremist organizations like al-Qaida and Jabhat al-Nusra and others who are backed by (hardline clerics') fatwas," he added.

"That has brought back the ghost of the killing not only to Iraq but to the region and as Iraq is part of the region and part of its fabric general and that we started to be affected by the storm the region is going through," he said.

The risks posed by the Syrian unrest are growing increasingly worrying for Baghdad.

Iraq's Interior Ministry spokesman said the deadly frontier clash happened in the western al-Waleed region, which borders Syria, and involved what he believes are members of the Free Syrian Army rebel group. The spokesman, Saad Maan Ibrahim, said Iraqi forces are increasingly coming under attack by armed groups from the Syrian side of the border.

"We are determined and we have the capabilities to repel any attack on our border posts," he said.

The ministry said it foiled two other attempts by gunmen and smugglers to infiltrate Iraq's border with Syria, forcing them to retreat back across the border.

Sadoun al-Shaalan, a member in the provincial council of Sunni-dominated Anbar province, also said clashes along the border are increasingly common between Free Syrian Army fighters and Iraqi police guards.

He blamed the clashes on "the sectarian fighting and tension taking place in Syria and the belief by the Syria opposition that Baghdad is supporting the Assad regime in its struggle with the opposition."

Shortly before al-Maliki landed in Irbil, a car bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into an Iraqi army checkpoint in a Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad, killing at least seven people and wounding 18 others, officials said.

The attack happened in the busy Kazimiyah neighborhood, which last week was the focus of an annual pilgrimage that brought hundreds of thousands of Shiite faithful to a golden-domed shrine where two revered Shiite saints are buried.

Authorities imposed strict security measures throughout the capital to protect pilgrims, and no major attacks occurred during the pilgrimage itself, which peaked midweek. It commemorates the death of one of the saints, Imam Moussa al-Kadhim.

Those killed Sunday included five soldiers and two civilian bystanders, according to police.

A medical official in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

Shiites are one of the favorite targets for hardline Sunni insurgents who consider them infidels. Violence has spiked in Iraq in recent weeks, raising fears of a return to widespread sectarian bloodshed.

88% The Angels' Share

All Critics (83) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (10)

The result is a sometimes gritty, occasionally charming Highland hybrid, but the final balance feels slightly off-kilter.

Loach takes us through the mysteries of whisky making, exploring the subtle tastes and scents in ways that will have audiences wishing they had a dram at hand. But a glass also serves more symbolic purposes ...

If you want to look for it, you'll find a layer of metaphor (the distilling process as a symbol of the characters' evolution) and social-realist commentary amid the gentle, life-affirming laughs.

[Ken Loach] and his longtime screenwriter, Paul Laverty, find a good balance between drama and wacky character moments.

A lark, but it's a serious-minded lark, addressing issues of class and culture, the haves and have-nots.

Charming enough to satisfy even the trenchant-commentary crowd.

Ken Loach walks on the lighter side

The title, by the way, refers to the distillation process: the 2% of whisky that evaporates in the barrel is known as "the angel's share." I'm afraid there's more than 2% evaporation going on in Loach's latest.

Much like a stiff drink at the end of a long day, "The Angels' Share" gets the job done, but you're probably not going to remember it in the morning.

Loach's realism lends an easygoing, ramshackle quality to the film that smoothes over any lack of tightness.

Director Ken Loach's latest glimpse of the U.K. underclass is really two rather different movies, either of which I would've enjoyed on their own. But they don't really fit together in any satisfying or even logical way.

A fairy tale with its feet firmly on the ground.

Whether Robbie pulls off his caper should be left for the audience to discover. But Loach's great cinematic switcheroo goes off almost without a hitch.

As heartwarming and uplifting as any tale could be that features vicious beatings and grand larceny.

While it has some likable characters, particularly its charismatic lead, it's impossible to shake the feeling that we've seen this movie before.

Lead actor Paul Brannigan, the product of Glasgow's working-class East End, is a natural.

The usual Loachian elements are all in place, but there is a gentle spirit at work here as well, and not just the alcoholic spirits around which the plot revolves.

The Angels' Share is a stellar bit of activist cinema with a light touch.

LG Optimus F3 coming to Sprint June 14th for $30 on contract

LG Optimus F3 coming to Sprint June 14th for $30 on contract

The LG Optimus F3 has now gone public, and it's unsurprisingly on its way to Sprint starting June 14th. For $30 with a two-year contract (after the dreaded $50 mail-in rebate, mind), the device sits on the fence that separates entry-level from mid-range. While the 4-inch (resolution isn't specified, but it's most likely WVGA) smartphone will likely be coveted by Android lovers on a budget, some of its specs are reasonable for those needing a little extra power: it sports Android 4.1, a 2,460mAh battery, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, NFC, LTE, Gorilla Glass 2, a 5MP rear camera and unspecified front-facing cam. TalkBack is also preloaded on the device, which is a voice guidance feature meant to benefit the visually impaired. If this sounds like your dream phone -- or even a handset you wouldn't mind forking $30 and two years of your life to get -- you can order it online in silver or purple, with retail channels receiving inventory later this summer.

Carey Mulligan As Hillary Clinton? 'Great Gatsby' Star Reportedly Front-Runner For Lead Role In 'Rodham'

It looks like Carey Mulligan got that 3 a.m. phone call. According to THR, Mulligan has become the front-runner to play Hillary Rodham Clinton in "Rodham." Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Chastain and Amanda Seyfried were among those actresses initially rumored as possibilities for the role in director James Ponsoldt's highly anticipated biopic. (Chastain, however, denied any involvement in an interview last week.)

Based on a script by Young Il Kim, "Rodham" focuses on the former Secretary of State's younger years, when she worked on the House Judiciary Committee during the Watergate scandal. (The House Judiciary Committee recommended that President Richard Nixon be impeached.) The film also tracks her burgeoning relationship with Bill Clinton, a role that has yet to be cast. The Daily Beast recently got its hands on the "Rodham" screenplay and reported that the onscreen version of Hillary swears frequently and has no trouble discussing her sex life with Bill. "[Our sex life] depends upon what the meaning of the word 'sex' means," Hillary says at one point. (A sly nod, perhaps, to this infamous moment.)

This is a big year for Mulligan, who recently appeared as Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's hit film "The Great Gatsby," and also stars opposite Justin Timberlake and Oscar Isaac in the upcoming Coen brothers' film "Inside Llewyn Davis."

For more on the Carey Mulligan as Hillary Clinton casting, hit THR.

Grants to fund new life sciences research and industry partnerships at UMass Amherst and the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute

AMHERST, Mass. Governor Deval Patrick and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) today announced over $100 million in grants for life-sciences-related capital projects in western Massachusetts, including $95 million for the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst and $5.5 million for the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute (PVLSI), a joint venture of Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and UMass Amherst.

"Our Life Sciences strategy is about choosing to shape our future - investing today to leave a better Commonwealth for the next generation," said Governor Patrick. "These investments support the kind of innovation that propels our economy forward and prepares our citizens for the 21st century global marketplace."

Through the MLSC, Massachusetts is investing $1 billion over 10 years in the growth of the state's life sciences supercluster. These investments are being made under the Massachusetts Life Sciences Initiative, passed by the state Legislature and signed into law by Governor Patrick in 2008.

"A key strategy of the Life Sciences Center is to use our capital dollars to accelerate life sciences-driven economic development across the Commonwealth by engaging and building on regional strengths," said Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, Ph.D., President and CEO of the MLSC. "Our investments in UMass Amherst and PVLSI are great examples of that strategy. In addition to its role as a leading academic institution, UMass Amherst is an important catalyst for economic development in western Massachusetts. The MLSC's investment in three new Centers at UMass Amherst: a Biosensors & Big Data Center, Healthcare Informatics & Technology Innovation Center and the Models to Medicine Center enhance the University's ability to support both of these missions. The grant for PVLSI also will strengthen the region's leadership in the expanding field of bioinformatics, building on the $4.5-million grant that we recently awarded to the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center in Holyoke."

The grant for UMass Amherst will fund construction to fit out and equip a substantial portion of the university's new $157-million Life Sciences Laboratories. This building will house three new research centers led by faculty and will be dedicated to partnering with regional life sciences and precision manufacturing companies to develop innovative products and services. The three centers are as follows:

  • Personalized Health Monitoring, focused on developing nanotechnology and large dataset management to improve health care through low-cost, wearable, wireless sensors that analyze patient data continuously in real time. This center will bring bio-sensor technology, nanotechnology, new polymer and manufacturing techniques, "big data" and information technology together to design, develop and test the next generation of wearable bio-sensors and healthy lifestyle applications. Biomanufacturing firms, medical device makers, big data analysts and other health care industry partners will produce prototypes, test them and assess manufacturing feasibility.
  • Bioactive Delivery, focused on discovery and application of new drug, agricultural and "nutriceutical" compounds. It will draw on discoveries and research by UMass Amherst faculty who, for example, develop synthetic molecules that can fight infection in new ways and design all-natural formulations for delivering oil-soluble vitamins and other nutrients in food products.
  • Models to Medicine, focused on translating basic protein research by UMass Amherst experts into new therapeutic targets. This center will capitalize on an explosion of discoveries over the past 10 years that suggest a variety of protein dysfunctions play a role in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer and infectious diseases.

"This investment is an outstanding example of how world-class research at UMass, with support from the MLSC, can create a dynamic and prosperous future for the Commonwealth," said Robert Caret, president of the University of Massachusetts. "The development of three new research centers in partnership with industry will enhance technology transfer and translate inventions into products and services that will make life better for all of us."

"We are grateful to the MLSC for selecting UMass Amherst to be a catalyst for new advances in the life sciences," said UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy. "This grant positions us for new directions in translational research and for increased engagement with industry and other educational institutions in western Massachusetts and throughout the Commonwealth. UMass is committed to growing these relationships to advance economic development as part of our land grant mission."

"The UMass campus can have a large impact on local area businesses and has been working with regional groups connecting companies to new technologies," said Ed Leyden, co-chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative and president of Ben Franklin Design and Manufacturing Company in Agawam. "I see the current life science initiative as another excellent means to engage local companies."

The grant for PVLSI, located adjacent to Baystate Medical Center's main campus in Springfield's North End, will support the development of a new Center of Innovation in Health Informatics and Technology, focused on advancing public/private-sector partnerships and incubating innovative technology solutions developed by start-ups and larger, more established vendor firms in areas such as population health management, health care quality, "big data" analytics and mobile health.

"The assets we have in place in Springfieldbeginning with a strong integrated health system in Baystate Health, and extending to the Pioneer Valley's advanced high-tech manufacturing capabilitiesprovide a unique opportunity for our prospective start-up and vendor partners to accelerate and incubate their products here in western Massachusetts, benefiting our community's health care and economy," said Joel Vengco, vice president and chief information officer of Baystate Health.

"As a champion of the life sciences industry for nearly two decades, I am thrilled with today's announcement. In my opinion, the expansion of research and development in the field of the life sciences can improve the quality of health care, grow the economy and create jobs in the Pioneer Valley. These two major grants can be game changers for the life sciences and biotechnology communities in western Massachusetts," said Congressman Richard E. Neal.

"The ripple effects of these investments will be enormously positive for western Massachusetts," Massachusetts State Senate Majority Leader Stan Rosenberg said. "Not only will this funding help place our flagship campus exactly where it needs to be -- at the vanguard of life sciences research and development -- it will also help create good jobs and technological innovations that we can scarcely imagine today. This project, which is engaging the best and brightest from academia, government and the private sector, is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished when we work together in a spirit of partnership."

"The growth of the life sciences industry is crucial to the continued health of the Massachusetts economy," said Representative Ellen Story. "Equally important to the Western Massachusetts economy is our continued support for the University of Massachusetts, as it embarks on its most ambitious expansion in half a century. I am grateful that this investment in our economy has been made at the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts."

"MassBio was proud to support UMass in this process, and is thrilled to see investment in these key industry areas," said Robert K. Coughlin, President & CEO of MassBio. "These grants enable UMass Amherst and the PVLSI to continue to anchor the life sciences industry in the Pioneer Valley and Western Massachusetts, underlining the fact that the industry truly reaches to all of our borders and the regions in between."
